General Condition Guidance

Dementia Emergency Guide

This person may appear confused, lost, frightened, or unable to explain what is happening. Stay calm, look for emergency identification, and call 911 if immediate safety or health is at risk.

Emergency Guidance

Immediate Steps

  • Approach calmly. Identify yourself as a helper.
  • Speak slowly and clearly. Use short, simple sentences.
  • Check for medical alert bracelet, wallet card, or phone Medical ID.
  • Redirect gently if confused or agitated. Do not argue.
  • Validate feelings, then guide to safety or a quiet space.

Call 911 Immediately If:

  • They are injured or have fallen
  • They are lost or wandering and you cannot safely help
  • They show signs of stroke (facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty)
  • Sudden or unusually severe confusion — may indicate another medical emergency
  • Sudden change accompanied by weakness, speech difficulty, injury, fever, breathing problems, or reduced responsiveness
  • They are in an unsafe environment (traffic, extreme weather, water)

Do Not:

  • Do not argue or try to reason extensively
  • Do not use complex sentences or rapid speech
  • Do not physically restrain unless absolutely necessary for safety
  • Do not assume they understand who you are
  • Do not leave them alone in an unsafe situation

After the Immediate Situation

  • If fully alert and swallowing safely, offer a quiet place to rest. Do not give food or drink when alertness or swallowing is uncertain.
  • The person may be tired and disoriented
  • Contact emergency numbers if found on ID
  • Stay with the person until help arrives or they are safe

Find Emergency ID

Look for personal emergency information only on an ID, card, phone, or other item associated with the person.
