General Condition Guidance

Autism & Communication Support Emergency Guide

This person may communicate differently or not at all verbally. Reduce sensory input, use simple language, allow extra time, and look for communication instructions. Call 911 if there is immediate danger, severe injury, or a medical emergency.

Emergency Guidance

Immediate Steps

  • Reduce sensory overload — minimize noise, bright lights, and crowding.
  • Use simple, direct language. Avoid complex questions or rapid speech.
  • Allow extra processing time. Wait calmly for a response.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical contact unless required for immediate safety.
  • Look for communication instructions, visual aids, or caregiver information.

Call 911 Immediately If:

  • There is immediate physical danger to the person or others
  • They have a severe injury or bleeding
  • They are having difficulty breathing
  • They are in an unsafe environment and cannot be safely guided away
  • There is another clear medical emergency

Do Not:

  • Do not assume non-verbal means unable to understand
  • Do not use complex or figurative language
  • Do not crowd the person or surround them with people
  • Do not insist on eye contact or physical touch
  • Do not rush or pressure them to respond quickly

After the Immediate Situation

  • Allow the person time to regulate after the situation
  • Provide a quiet, low-stimulation environment
  • Contact caregiver if information is available
  • Do not force conversation or interaction
