General Condition Guidance

Parkinson's Emergency Guide

This person may experience freezing, difficulty moving, speech challenges, or balance problems. Allow extra response time, do not rush or pull them, and be aware that medication timing may be important. Sudden new symptoms may indicate another emergency such as stroke.

Emergency Guidance

Immediate Steps

  • Allow extra time for the person to respond and move — do not rush them.
  • If they are experiencing 'freezing,' guide them with a calm voice and simple cues like 'step forward.'
  • Be aware of fall risk — offer a steady arm or stable support if needed.
  • Speak clearly and wait for responses — speech may be soft or slow.
  • Look for medication schedule information — timing may be critical.

Call 911 Immediately If:

  • They have fallen and may be injured
  • They show sudden new symptoms such as facial drooping or one-sided weakness (possible stroke)
  • They become suddenly confused or unresponsive
  • They have difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • They are in an unsafe situation and cannot move to safety

Do Not:

  • Do not pull or rush the person — this increases fall risk
  • Do not assume cognitive impairment — Parkinson's primarily affects movement
  • Do not interrupt medication schedules without medical guidance
  • Do not ignore sudden new symptoms — they may indicate stroke or another emergency
  • Do not speak loudly assuming hearing difficulty — speech may be soft but hearing is often unaffected

After the Immediate Situation

  • Allow the person to rest and recover at their own pace
  • Ensure they are in a safe, stable position
  • Contact caregiver or emergency contact if available
  • Locate the medication schedule for the person, caregiver, or responders
