Immediate Steps
- Use B.E. F.A.S.T.: Balance loss, Eye/vision changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty.
- Note the time symptoms began or the last known well time — this is critical for treatment.
- Call 911 immediately if any stroke signs are present — time is brain.
- Keep the person safe and comfortable. Follow 911 dispatcher instructions.
- Monitor breathing and responsiveness while waiting for emergency services.
Call 911 Immediately If:
- ANY sign of stroke is present — call 911 immediately
- Sudden facial drooping, especially on one side
- Sudden arm weakness or numbness, especially on one side
- Sudden speech difficulty or confusion
- Sudden vision changes, dizziness, or loss of balance
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
Do Not:
- Do not drive the person to the hospital unless emergency services direct otherwise
- Do not give food, drink, aspirin, or any medication unless directed by a dispatcher or medical professional
- Do not ignore temporary symptoms — a 'mini-stroke' (TIA) is a warning sign
- Do not let the person sleep it off or wait to see if symptoms improve
- Do not delay calling 911 — every minute matters
After the Immediate Situation
- Provide all information to emergency responders
- Share the last known well time and any medications
- Contact the person's emergency contacts if available
- Do not attempt to transport the person yourself
