Severe Allergies / Anaphylaxis Emergency Guide
This CareID is associated with a person at risk of a severe allergic reaction. Look for signs of anaphylaxis, locate prescribed rescue medication when identified, and call 911 when indicated.

Immediate Steps
- Recognize symptoms: difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue, hives, dizziness, weak pulse.
- Help locate an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen or similar).
- Assist with administering epinephrine if the person cannot do it themselves and you are trained or following verified instructions.
- Call 911 immediately after epinephrine is used — even if symptoms improve.
- Keep the person lying down with legs elevated unless breathing difficulty makes this uncomfortable.
Call 911 Immediately If:
- Epinephrine has been administered — always call 911 after
- The person has difficulty breathing or swallowing
- There is swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- The person becomes dizzy, weak, or loses consciousness
- No auto-injector is available and symptoms are progressing
Do Not:
- Do not delay calling 911 — anaphylaxis is life-threatening
- Do not give food or drink if breathing or swallowing is impaired
- Do not assume symptoms will resolve on their own
- Do not administer medication that is not the person's verified prescription
- Do not leave the person alone — a second reaction can occur
After the Immediate Situation
- The person must be evaluated by emergency medical services
- A second reaction can occur hours after the first
- Stay with the person until EMS arrives
- Provide used auto-injector to emergency responders
