  • Use simple, direct language. Avoid complex questions or rapid speech.
  • Allow extra processing time. Wait calmly for a response.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical contact unless required for immediate safety.
  • Look for communication instructions, visual aids, or caregiver information.

Call 911 Immediately If:

  • There is immediate physical danger to the person or others
  • They have a severe injury or bleeding
  • They are having difficulty breathing
  • They are in an unsafe environment and cannot be safely guided away
  • There is another clear medical emergency

Do Not:

  • Do not assume non-verbal means unable to understand
  • Do not use complex or figurative language
  • Do not crowd the person or surround them with people
  • Do not insist on eye contact or physical touch
  • Do not rush or pressure them to respond quickly

  • Allow the person time to regulate after the situation
